Neapolitan School

Neapolitan School is a group of composers that over about a hundred years from 1650 - from Naples - the story of the opera instrumental certain.

As the founder applies Francesco Provenzale, as the first leading champion Alessandro Scarlatti. Determining genus was first opera seria with its highly idealized heroes and kings, etc., and a firmly established musical sequence of recitative (for the action) and da capo aria ( state description ). Other well-known composer of the Neapolitan school are Nicola Porpora, Francesco Durante, Leonardo da Vinci, Francesco Feo, Leonardo Leo, Francesco Mancini and Johann Adolph Hasse. Later Niccolò Jommelli and Tommaso Traetta followed and extended the rigid form by dramatic recitative accompanied by the orchestra accompagnato and combinations of numbers to larger scenes.

Well-known lyricist whose libretti were set to music by the composer of the Neapolitan school, was Pietro Metastasio and Apostolo Zeno.

In the 18th century arose from the inserted into the opera seria intermezzi the serene opera buffa. Influenced by the Neapolitan school were, among others, Christoph Willibald Gluck and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
