Nebula Device

The Nebula Device is an open source game engine, which is mainly developed by the Berlin firm Radon Labs and made available under the MIT license. It runs under Windows, Linux, Irix, Mac OS and Xbox.

The engine includes, among other things:

  • As a core component of a 3D engine
  • A name-based object management
  • Universal scripting connections, such as the use of Tcl, Python and Lua. Standard on-board is a special version of Tcl called MicroTCL.
  • Animation system
  • Resource Management
  • Persistent objects
  • Various utility classes, such as for network.
  • Various tools, such as a texture viewer and model viewer.

The Nebula Device is used for various commercial projects.

Currently, version 3 of the Nebula engine is in development. Parts of the version 3 were incorporated into Version 2. This intermediate version comes in RPG The Dark Eye: Drakensang used.

Nebula 3

Nebula 3 is a completely revised, (partially) rewritten version of Nebula 2 dar. Since Nebula 3, not only for the PC, but also for game consoles ( PS3, Wii, XBox 360, and others) is developed, would license problems, should the developers publish the console specific code. Thus, the open source code of Nebula 3 is intended only for the PC.

Nebula 3 was for the development of role-playing game Drakensang: The River of Time used. In the game Drakensang Online, a MMORPG adapted for the version of the Nebula engine is employed.
