It flows near the Rainbow Bridge at the Sabine Lake, an estuary, in which also the Sabine River flows. Two major reservoirs, Lake Palestine and of the Lake BA Steinhagen are located along the river. In the catchment area of the Neches River are several cities, including Evadale, Tyler, Lufkin, Silsbee, Beaumont, Vidor, Port Neches, Nederland, Groves, and Port Arthur.

The left tributary Angelina River, which is dammed by the Sam Rayburn Dam, hits above Lake BA Steinhagen on the Neches River.

Below the Lake B. A. Steinhagen to Beaumont, the river flows through the 390 km ² large Big Thicket National Preserve. This is an important biosphere reserve, the visitor center is located several miles north of Kountze on U.S. Highway 69.

The Port of Beaumont is located on the Neches River at Beaumont - between the river mouth and the Rainbow Bridge.
