Neighborhoods in New York City

The Administrative divisions of New York City takes place on two levels:

  • The city of New York is divided into five boroughs ("city districts " ), which correspond to counties ( " districts ") of the State of New York.
  • The boroughs in turn are divided into a total of 59 Community Districts ( CD ), the role of the Charter of the City of New York are set out in Chapter 69.

The Community Districts, however, perceive scarcely administrative duties in the strict sense, but serve mainly the improved participation of citizens. Each Community District has a community board with up to 50 members, the residents of the respective Community Districts need to be and ( City Council ) are appointed proportionally by the Borough President of the respective boroughs and the local representatives in the City Council. The Community Boards serve as the first point of contact for citizens' complaints and have a say in planning projects.

Are superimposed the boundaries of Community Districts from the territories of other municipal authorities, such as the office districts ( Precincts ) fire and police departments, and school districts ( School Districts) that coincide only partially with the boundaries of Community Districts.

The community districts in turn are composed of different neighborhoods, which is why New York has found as City of Neighborhoods in literature. However, the neighborhoods are no defined administrative units, but names that have evolved over time for individual districts. Many of these neighborhoods go back to historical towns, such as today's Bushwick to 1661, founded by Dutch settlers Boswijck. Others go back to real estate speculators who were instrumental in the development of each district; Brownsville, for example, is named after Charles S. Brown, who bought the area and after 1865 there was built 250 houses. Still other names date back to historic immigrant groups, such as Little Italy and China Town and some newer names are inventions of the real estate industry in order to market an area better as NoHo ( North of Houston Street) or Dumbo (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass ). Neighborhoods are often characterized by a certain, relatively uniform architectural style or a certain ethnic composition. They can be compared with neighborhoods in Berlin.
