Neil Gehrels

Neil Gehrels ( Cornelis A. Gehrels ) ( born October 3, 1952 in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin ) is an American astronomer who specializes in gamma-ray astronomy.

Gehrels deals with gamma-ray astronomy and the development of appropriate monitoring instruments and satellites. His scientific interests are particularly gamma-ray bursts and supernovae. In 1976, he earned bachelor degrees in physics and music at the University of Arizona, 1982, he received his doctorate at the California Institute of Technology. He was Project Scientist for the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (1991-2000 ). Gehrels is Head of the Laboratory for Astroparticle Physics of the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and senior scientist of the Swift mission (since 1998) and Mission Scientist for integral ( since 1995) and Deputy Project Scientist for GLAST ( since 2000).

Gehrels is married and has two children. His father was Tom Gehrels.
