Neil Oatley

Neil Oatley ( born June 12, 1954) is a British engineer and designer of racing cars in Formula 1

Oatley studied Automotive Engineering at Loughborough University. After graduating in 1976, he was employed briefly at Consine Dynamics before becoming abgeworden from Williams in late 1977 to work on the side of Patrick Head and Frank Dernie in the development of racing cars. Oatley remained seven years at Williams and was at this time a race engineer by Clay Regazzoni (1979 ), Carlos Reutemann (1980 and 1981 ) and Jacques Laffite.

The end of 1984 brought Carl Haas Oatley as a partner of John Baldwin in the development department of his new Beatrice - Lola team. After the early end of the team in November 1986 Oatley moved to the side of John Barnard to McLaren. 1987 Barnard went to Ferrari and was replaced by Gordon Murray, under the Steve Nichols developed the McLaren MP4 / 4 in 1988, who could win 15 of 16 races. After Murray's move to McLaren Automotive Oatley was given responsibility for the development of the McLaren MP4 / 5 for the 1989 season. He remained chief designer until he moved in 2003 to the post of managing director and Mike Coughlan took over the design department. In Oatley cars could Alain Prost (1989 ), Ayrton Senna ( 1990 and 1991) and Mika Hakkinen (1998 and 1999) to win the world championship.
