Nel Benschop

Nel Benschop (actually Benschop Nelly Anna, born January 16, 1918 in The Hague, † January 31, 2005 in Arnhem) was a Dutch poet.

Life

Nel Benschop grew up in an orthodox Calvinist family that had a nursery. From 1937, when she had the " kweekschool ," the school for primary school teachers completed, until 1981, when she retired, she was a teacher, sometimes in private schools. Twice she had fallen in love with a man who turned out to be already married as. Because according to their belief, such a relationship is a sin against the Ten Commandments was ( Thou shalt not commit adultery ), she broke off these contacts without that they could get an intimate character. That brought Nel Benschop much heartache, she mastered through prayer and writing poems. Later she successfully tried to write on the basis of their deep faith, little poems to strengthen and comfort of other people. Recurring themes here are the suffering, death, and the consolation of the Christian Gospel.

Works

Nel Benschops poetry has no literary value; she had no intention to write literature. Her poems called Benschop himself: " Meditations on rhyme". Her poems are often read by mainly older people from Protestant- Christian circles, and performed in church services and funerals.

Translation:

These lines were long time, until around 1990, very popular as early Dutch mourning ads in newspapers. In thousands of grave stones especially the first line was engraved.
