History

A variety finds indicate a prehistoric settlement of the area. In the course of the various administrative reforms of the Liberal Revolution in 1822 the county was established in 1852 Nelas newly created by the merger of the previously independent circuits Senhorim and Canas de Senhorim. Some development took the circle with arrival of the railway in 1882 and improved in various stages of road access.

Economy

The industry is an important engine of the economy of Nelas. His rail and road connections, raw material deposits in the Minas da Urgeiriça and produced by nearby power plants energy created the condition for the emergence and dispersal of industries. Meanwhile, however, a relative de-industrialization has taken place in the circuit, which is met with establishment of new businesses in the industrial park of the circle.

Nelas is located in the wine region of Dão. With the Festa / Feira do Vinho do Dão here hosts one of the most important festivals of the wine region. The Centro de Estudos Vitivinícolas, the research center of the Dão wine region, has its headquarters in Nelas. In addition to the wine is also the rest of the agricultural economy. Thus, the local cheese variant is part of the protected origin ( Portuguese: Denominação de Origem Protegida ) cheese Queijo Serra da Estrela. Even the local olive oil is mentioned.

The train station of Nelas is a stop on the railway line Linha da Beira Alta.

Nelas located along the national road N234, which passes about 10 km southwest in the four-lane expressway IC12, while at the connection point Mangualde the A25 motorway (also European Route 80) crosses 15 km north-east.

The village is part of the nationwide bus network of speech Expressos.
