Nelson's Dockyard

Nelson 's Dockyard is a historic waterfront in English Harbour on the south coast of the Caribbean island of Antigua. It belongs as a local location ( Village ) to English Harbour - Middle Ground in the Parish of St. Paul.

Conditioning and Exhibits

Nelson 's Dockyard was named after the formerly stationed commander Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson.

The hurricane safe natural harbor wude 1671 first used by the British. 1725 emerged the first building, and from 1743 the naval base has expanded dramatically. In the 18th and 19th centuries was regarded as the most important naval base in the UK on the Lesser Antilles in order to protect the local colonies and the merchant ships from attack. During the Napoleonic wars of the 1800s and 1810s it was Nelson's main base in the Caribbean.

In the 1950s, the association Friends of English Harbour participated in the system, in 1961 it was reopened. Today it is managed by the National Park Antigua ( NPA). The former workshops, residential and warehouses are being used today by loving restoration touristy, among other things, a hotel and an exclusive marina. The buildings to be visited today originate exclusively from the period 1785-1792.

The area is now one of the largest open-air museums in the Caribbean, is the center of Nelson 's Dockyard National Park, and can be visited daily.
