Nelson Aguiar Ramírez

Nelson Alberto Aguiar Ramírez ( born August 12, 1945 in Cuba) is a Cuban dissident. The teacher is the chairman and founding member of the banned Orthodox Liberal Party of Cuba ( Partido Ortodoxo de Cuba ).

On 18 March 2003 Aguiar Ramírez was arrested as part of the so-called "Black Spring", the biggest wave of arrests in Cuba since the revolution of 1959. In a summary trial he was sentenced to 13 years in prison for setting up a party. Basis of the ruling was the law 88 ( Art 6.1 ) to ensure the National Independence and Economy of Cuba. Aguiar was recognized by Amnesty International as a political prisoner.

On 20 October 2009 Aguiar was dismissed because of his precarious health on parole from prison after the Spanish government had begun talks with the Cuban leadership for him. Shortly thereafter, he traveled with his wife Dolia Leal, a co-founder of the human rights organization Damas de Blanco, the American exile.
