Nelson College

The Nelson College is a school in Nelson, New Zealand. It is the oldest public school in New Zealand. Since its founding in 1856, the school is boys only possible, however, an extensive cooperation with the Nelson College for Girls. The school also includes a boarding school, which today in particular ensure the education of many students from the Asian region.

Because of its high academic standards, the Nelson College enjoys a high reputation in many parts of Asia and Oceania. The school is attended by about 1,100 students from 60 nations, which are divided into 8 Houses. The former are organized as part of the Nelson College Old Boys.

Well-known graduates are Nobel Prize winner Ernest Rutherford, the New Zealand Prime Minister Bill Rowling and Geoffrey Palmer, Secretary General of the Commonwealth Don McKinnon, the sailing Olympic champion Rex Sellers and numerous boards of large New Zealand and American companies. Much attention also became the school by the hosting of the first rugby game in New Zealand on March 14, 1870.
