Nelson County (Virginia)
Nelson County is a county located in the state of Virginia in the United States. In 2000, the County had 14,445 inhabitants and a population density of 12 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Lovingston.
Nelson County is located in west-central Virginia and has an area of 1228 square kilometers, of which five square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Albemarle County, Buckingham County, Appomattox County, Amherst County, Rockbridge County and Augusta County.
According to the census of 2000, there were 14,445 people in Nelson County. Of these, 206 people were living in collective centers, the other residents living in 5,887 households and 4,144 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 82.65 percent White, 14.89 percent Black or African American, 0.19 percent Native American, 0.24 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.62 percent from other races groups; 1.35 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.11 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 5,887 households out of which 27.1 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.7 percent were married couples living together, 10.7 percent were single mothers, 29.6 percent were non-families, 25.0 percent of all households and 10.3 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.88.
Based on the county the population was spread from 21.7 percent population under 18 years, 6.4 percent between 18 and 24 years, 25.6 percent between 25 and 44 years, 29.6 percent between 45 and 64 years and 16.8 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 94.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.4 men statistically.
The median income for a household was $ 36,769, and the median income for a family was $ 42,917. Males have a median income of $ 29,684, women $ 24,153. The per capita income was $ 22,230. 12.1 percent of the population and 8.5 percent of families are below the poverty line. This included 14.4 percent of children and adolescents under 18 years and 14.6 percent of the population aged 65 years.
