The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium is a football stadium in Port Elizabeth, South Africa with 46,000 seats, which was built for the World Cup 2010 in South Africa. The stadium bears because of the roof structure nicknamed "The Sunflower" ( German: " The Sunflower" ).

History

The architectural design was made by the German architects Gerkan, Marg and Partners ( gmp), Hamburg, the structural design of the roof was carried out by the engineering firm Schlaich, Berger and Partner, Stuttgart. The stadium, with the originally planned cost of R1.1-billion, 100 million euros, was built at the North End Lake in the heart of the city and consists of five ranks. Construction began in early September 2006, with completion in May 2009 and the official opening in early June. The stadium is equipped with 150 VIP boxes, 60 Business lodges, a store for sports apparel, sports hall, 500 parking spaces, as well as seminar and function rooms.

Named the stadium after the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in turn named after Nelson Mandela.

On 8 July 2008, the National Organizing Committee announced that the Confederations Cup will not take place at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in 2009, as was the construction progress at this time far behind schedule. With this measure, the organizing committee wanted to avoid embarrassment at the dress rehearsal for the 2010 World Cup. However, the stadium was the first of the World Cup stadiums would have been completely finished and ready for the Confederations Cup.
