Nelsonville is a town with 5,392 inhabitants ( 2010) in the northwestern Athens County, Ohio, United States.

The city is located on U.S. Highway 33, and is crossed by the rivers Hocking River and Monday Creek. In Nelsonville is a technical college, the Hocking College.

History

Already in 1774 discovered the governor of Virginia, John Murray, 4th Earl of Dunmore, on his way back from the Indian territories of present-day Ohio along the Hocking River that area where today is the western end of Nelsonville. Around 1810 a log cabin was built here, which probably served as a refuge hunters.

Daniel Nelson

In August 1814 Daniel Nelson bought with his wife Sarah Nelson Smith from Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, the land on which was built later named after him city. In June 1818 Nelson slipped from 57 plots, which he presented to the founding of the city. In 1821 there were already seven houses. 1823 Nelson donated a plot of land for the school, a. In 1820 Daniel Nelson built a larger log house in which he lived with his family. Daniel and Sarah Nelson had a total of 12 children, one was, however, died in the trek from Massachusetts to Ohio and was buried in Marietta. As the blockhouse had again become too small for the family, it was moved to the school grounds in the Columbus Street and served as a school. The house has remained preserved and is now after two more relocations in the Fayette Street.

Development of the city

The first mill was built in 1816 by Josiah Coe, it later became the Robbins Mill. Samual Robbins founded in 1825 first tannery. As early as 1820 Thomas Thompson opened the first inn in the place. 1822 James Knight was the first shopkeeper.

Nelsonville was a separate municipality in 1838 and Charles Cable was the first mayor. 1849 opened the Cables that Cable Store. The first bank was the Merchants and Miners Bank, founded in 1873. Already in 1846 a freemason lodge was founded in Nelsonville.

Education

1865, the first Elementary School was founded, which was until 1960 in operation. Today's East Elementary School followed in 1874 and was demolished in 1959. The West Elementary School was built in 1891 and 1971 razed. The Junior High School dates back to 1907. Junior High School and the Nelsonville High School still exist in the original and are at the Fayette Street, a few blocks from the center.
