Neo Phaliron Velodrome

The Velodrome Neo Faliro has been used at the Olympic Games in Athens in 1896 for the track cycling and for tennis competitions.

The initiator of this first modern Olympic Games and the Secretary General of the International Olympic Committee (IOC ), Pierre de Coubertin, had sought in Paris to plans for a velodrome. But the Greek Crown Prince Constantine, whose family came from Denmark, ordered in Copenhagen, plans for a velodrome created on the occasion of the web - Cycling World Championships 1896 in the suburb Ordrup to make this rebuild. The railway in Neo Faliro, a district of Piraeus, had a cement pad and raised curves, was 333.33 meters long and could seat 7000 spectators. The Velodrome was built within three months for 104 000 drachmas. The site was provided by the railway company Athens - Piraeus available. Inside were two tennis courts where the Olympic tournament was held.

Later, the velodrome was used as a football stadium and renamed in 1964 in Karaiskakis Stadium. The stadium was demolished in 2003 and rebuilt as a pure football stadium, where held, among other games of the football tournament of the 2004 Olympic Games.
