Neopentyl glycol is a diol, a divalent primary alcohol.

Properties

Physical Properties

Neopentyl glycol is a colorless, crystalline organic compound. The alcohol is good at room temperature in water, alcohols, ketones, and pyridine, however, only slightly soluble in aromatic or aliphatic hydrocarbons. Neopentyl glycol is hygroscopic. Neopentyl glycol tends to sublimation.

Chemical Properties

The neopentyl glycol shows the typical connection for the class of alcohols reactions, so it can be converted to the ester or ether, as well as to various heterocyclic compounds

Production

One of the most common industrial process for the production of neopentyl glycol is the hydrogenation of Aldoladditionsprodukts from isobutyraldehyde and formaldehyde.

As catalytically active bases are often alkali metal hydroxides, alkaline earth metal hydroxides or tertiary amines, for example trimethylamine, triethylamine or tri-n -propylamine is used. The latter have the advantage that they are quite volatile and, unlike the inorganic bases can be removed from the reaction mixture by distillation.

Use

Neopentyl glycol used mainly as a raw material for the manufacture of saturated polyester resins for powder coatings as well as for glass fiber reinforced plastics.

Safety

Neopentyl glycol is weakly irritating to mucous membranes.
