Neoraimondia herzogiana

Neoraimondia is a genus of flowering plants of the cactus family ( Cactaceae ). The botanical name of the genus honors the Italian naturalist Antonio Raimondi ( 1826-1890 ). The addition of " Neo " was necessary because the name was already assigned to Raimondia a genus of Annonengewächse ( Annonaceae ).

Description

The shrubby to arborescent, candelabra -like species of the genus Neoraimondia are branched and can reach a height of up to 15 meters. The upright, gray-green shoots usually reach diameters of up to 40 centimeters. Your 4-8 ribs are far apart. The large, round to oblong areoles are peg- like short shoots. They are brown tomentose, thorny and grow over many years on. The up to 12 (or more) spines are flexible and long to 25 inches.

The funnel-shaped flowers are pink or cream-colored, spring elongated spurs and open day. Your flower cup and the flower tube wear scales, areoles felted and sometimes bristles.

Systematics and distribution

The genus Neoraimondia is common in the dry areas along the Peruvian coast and in the Andes of Peru and Bolivia. The first description of the genus in 1920 by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose. They ordered her as the only way to the kind Pilocereus macrostibas described in 1903 by Karl Moritz Schumann. However, Curt Backeberg to show this, the plant was already described in 1834 by Franz Julius Ferdinand Meyen arequipensis as Cereus. Your correct name is therefore arequipensis Neoraimondia.

The genus includes two species:

A synonym of the genus is Neocardenasia Backeb.
