Labidesthes sicculus

The New World silversides ( Atherinopsidae ) live with over 100 species in 13 genera in South America, Central America and North America. About 50 species live in fresh water, the other in the sea, but go often in the brackish water of river mouths.

Features

The Atherinopsidae have two dorsal fins, the first with hard jets, the second, just as the anal fin, with a hard jet, followed by soft rays. The pectoral fins sit high on the fuselage. The mouth is small. A sibriges band along the sides featuring the family. In English, they have the name " Silversides ".

The largest species Odontesthes bonariensis is 52 inches long, the smallest Menidia ColEI reached 4.2 centimeters.

Zooplankton, insects and small fish are used to eating.

The larger species of the genera Chirostoma and Odontesthes be caught, or farmed in aquaculture.
