Nepalis in Austria

The Nepalis in Austria are citizens of Nepalese origin in Austria, mostly temporary expatriates, refugees, but also many living there permanently - together with their offspring born there.

The total population in 1250 Nepalis in Austria. Most of them live in the capital, Vienna, speaking Austrian German and Nepali. The religion of most Austrian Nepalis is either Hinduism or Buddhism, but there are lately some Muslims among the Nepalis in Austria.

Some Nepalis living in Austria, are asylum seekers and refugees. Many of them Lhotshampas ( Bhutanese Nepalese ) who were expelled from Bhutan, or even refugees as victims of the conflict between Maoists and the Nepalese army leadership. Not all of them want to give up their identity in favor of Austria. Because of the free space within the Schengen countries, it is also difficult their exact number, which should be higher than the official noted.

A certain number of Nepalis also working in positions through which they are important for the Austrian economy. There are about 150 university students from Nepal. Around 100 Nepalese citizens live permanently in Austria.
