Already in 1569 there was on the Spit, a " confusion of tongues " between German (government, church, school ), Lithuanian, Latvian Curonian ( Nehrungskurisch ) and Old Prussian. Curonian was much the language of the fishermen. The plebiscite of 1897 showed that from 1644 inhabitants of the main places of 994 ( approximately 60%) nehrungskurische the language used, even when fishing in 1064 (around 65%), as it is also concerned about a technical language. Because no Curonian services were offered more in the churches, was preached in Lithuanian, so that almost all treatments could understand and speak Lithuanian.

As the Spit in 1923 came to Lithuania, got the Nehrungsbewohner nationality problems: only a few opted for the Lithuanian membership, many emigrated to Germany, others were now living abroad as German further in their villages. 147 families were interviewed in 1956, and there was a majority of Großlitauern (59%) and Russians (21 %). Only 22 families (15 %) of the indigenous population were left.

1961, the formerly independent villages of the Lithuanian part of the Curonian Spit were merged to form the unit Neringa municipality. The administrative headquarters is located in Nida.
