Neritan Ceka

Neritan Ceka ( born February 11, 1941 in Tirana) is an Albanian archaeologist and politician. Since 1992 he has been Chairman of the Liberal Party Aleanca Demokratike. By 2009 he was a member of his party in the Albanian parliament.

Neritan Ceka is the son of Hasan Ceka, who founded the archeology as a science in Albania. He studied at the University of Tirana and was like his father, an archaeologist. His work focuses on the Illyrians and Greeks in classical and Hellenistic period and the Roman provincial archeology. He was a professor at the University of Tirana and from 1985 to 1990 head of the Architecture Department at the Archaeological Institute, he served as director from 1990 to 1993. He is a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute.

Neritan Ceka part of the year 1990/91 the founders of the Democratic Party. After the first multi-party elections in Albania in 1991, he led the parliamentary faction of the Democrats. Ceka criticized in 1992 the authoritarian leadership style of President Sali Berisha and the lack of internal party pluralism among the Democrats. He resigned from the party and founded the liberal Aleanca Demokratike. After the elections of 1997, he led his party in a coalition with the Socialists. In 1997 and 1998 he was a member of the government of Fatos Nano as Interior Minister. In the parliamentary elections of 2005 Ceka could win a mandate again. 2009 Ceka but lost his parliamentary seat.
