Description

The Nerl originates in the southwest of Yaroslavl Oblast near Pereslawl- Salesski and initially flows in a southerly direction between high, planted with coniferous and mixed forest. A little north of the lake Pleshcheyevo they should go east and soon reached the limits of Ivanovo and Vladimir Oblasts.

For some miles the Nerl now follows roughly the course of the boundary between the oblasts of Ivanovo and Vladimir, and then flows through a now open landscape eastward through the southwestern Ivanovo. After the confluence of the Uchtoma, its largest tributary, she turns to the southeast and reaches north of the town Suzdal again the Vladimir Oblast. She passes the town to the east and flows through open meadows south. Just a few kilometers it flows near the city of Vladimir in the Klyazma.

The Nerl is not navigable along its entire length of 284 km. Usually it freezes in November or December, and will remain until well into April covered by ice.
