Nerol ( IUPAC called 2,6-dimethyl- 2 ,6 -octadien- 8 -ol) is an acyclic monoterpene alcohol. The clear liquid has a fresh, sweet, rosy - citrus -like odor. Nerol is isomeric to geraniol.
Structure
Geraniol is the trans -isomer, nerol, cis- isomers of the compound having the same molecular formula. It is a primary, monohydric alcohol: the molecule has a hydroxyl group attached to the carbon atom to which hydroxyl group is bonded such, only one other carbon atom is directly bonded.
Occurrence
Nerol is found in lavender and rose oil.
Properties
The density is 0.88 g · cm -3. Nerol boils at about 225 ° C. The flash point is 100 ° C. In one liter of water is less than one gram of nerol are soluble. The refractive index of the liquid is 1.47. In the air it is oxidized to nerol oxide. Nerol is harmful.
Use
It is to the manufacture of citral, citronellol, vitamin A and vitamin E is required. It is used in perfumery in roses and floral fragrance compositions as fragrance.
