Mousetraps

The Eifel region in the 19th century, a landscape of great poverty, also caused by the Realerbteilung, the reduced agricultural livelihoods rapidly. Agriculture was extremely sparse. Commercial and artisan earning opportunities were low. Neroth was among the villages of the Eifel so far no exception. Therefore, a part of the native villagers operational ancillary trades such as peddling with carved spoons or wicker. In one small part of it was delivered early and fixed expectant Jenische Hausierhändler and Flick craftsmen. So the conditions for entry into the handicraft production and marketing of a much requested item, the murine and rat trap, were given to a former teacher from Neroth for the people of his village, designed as a way out of the Existenznot around the middle of the century.

Many of the poorer inhabitants - Jenische and not Jenische - operated in sequence with a peddling wire products, including mousetraps. As a result, the lives of many families improved significantly. The wire goods were produced mainly by women in their homes. The men sold the traps as traveling salesmen. The " Musfallskrämer " reached far beyond the boundaries of the present Federal Republic to Poland and in the Czech Republic. The peddlers used to communicate among themselves a secret language, the Jenischhaus. However, the increasing industrialization complicated the business from the beginning of the 20th century, increasingly, until it all came to a halt in 1970. The wire manufactured goods could be measured at any time with industrial finished products or were even of higher quality. Indicator was the " staked wire ". That is, the wires were wound at crossing points with a finer wire. Today is in Neroth the mousetrap museum and documented the work and the simple life of the mousetrap makers. Furthermore, a book and a Dokumantarfilm exists on this topic.

After the Second World War Spang then his university studies can compete but was professor at Echternach high school and later Director of the National Archives.

Here everyone was friendly with me and I was even allowed to walk with Pastor Schelian, nevertheless this the local area was not allowed to leave at the behest of the Gestapo. "
