Neschwitz

Neschwitz, Upper Sorbian Njeswačidło, is a place and the associated community about 14 km northwest of Bautzen in Upper Lusatia in Saxony. Neschwitz is located in the Biosphere Reserve Upper Lusatian Heath and Pond Landscape. It is the seat of the administrative community Neschwitz.

History

The oldest known mention of the settlement as Nyzwas comes from in 1268. Already at the beginning of the 15th century a knight's seat is here mentioned.

In 1936, the municipality was expanded by the neighboring towns Holscha, Neudorf and Lomske. Other regional reforms affiliated Doberschütz 1974, 1978 Zescha, 1993 and 1994 Saritsch Luga one.

Population

For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia Arnost Muka determined in the eighties of the 19th century had a total population of 531 inhabitants; which were 441 Sorbs ( 83%) and 90 German. Since then, the use of Sorbian has declined in Neschwitz itself. The districts Lomske, Doberschütz and Caßlau in the west of the community are, however, still home to most of the Sorbs.

According to the census of 2011, there were at this time of 2,498 inhabitants, 837 Protestant (33.5% ), 474 Roman Catholic ( 19%) and 1,187 belonged to another or no religion at ( 47.5 %).

Education

The community Neschwitz has a primary school. The middle school in the village was closed in 2005. The closest high school is now in Königswartha.

Personalities

Sons and daughters of the town

  • August Adolph von Haugwitz (1647-1706), poet and playwright
  • Arnold Freiherr von Vietinghoff Riesch (1895-1962), forester, ornithologist and conservationist. Until the 1945 expropriation him the baroque castle Neschwitz belonged together with the associated good with agriculture and forestry.
