Neshoba County, Mississippi

The Neshoba County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Philadelphia, which was named after the town in Pennsylvania.

The County is located just north-east of the geographic center of Mississippi, is about 70 km to the east of Alabama and has an area of 1481 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered by the following counties:

History

Neshoba County was formed on December 23, 1833 from parts of the Choctaw country. It was named after the Indian word for wolf.

On June 21, 1964, the three American civil rights activist James Earl Chaney, Michael Schwerner and Andrew Goodman were murdered in Neshoba County, Mississippi, by the Ku Klux Klan members. The film " Mississippi Burning - The root of hate " from 1988 is based on these events.
