NetCologne rented partially the final piece of cable, the last mile so called, from Deutsche Telekom. Through the expansion of its own fiber-optic network NetCologne to connect its customers directly and independently of the Telekom to the internet - 40 % of all connections are so far over its own network ( FTTB, FTTC, HFC ) realized. The circuit of the copper wires to customers, on the fiber optic network of NetCologne by means of Optical Network Units ( ONU). The network of NetCologne is connected to the DE- CIX, LINX, AMS -IX and ECIX.

Network roll NetCologne pursued different connection strategies: to be able to supply as many people beyond the metropolitan areas, with high-speed connections, the company relies on a mix of technologies. In areas of high population density is the expansion via FTTB ( Fiber to the Building =, optical fiber to the house), HFC ( Hybrid Fibre Coax) strategy. Alternatively NetCologne invested in the expansion of the FTTC network ( = Fibre to the Curb ). Where a direct connection of the building is not economically feasible, the glass fiber is laid to street cabinets on site, thus the power to up to 50 Mbit / s is increased.

NetCologne provides its own network as Open Access other competitors available.

Exchanges

The call-processing network of NetCologne currently consists of five switches that are fully meshed with each other. Each switch also has connections to other network operators, especially here at the German Telekom. The exchanges provided by the system manufacturer Alcatel -Lucent.

For network expansion towards the Rhine -Erft, Aachen / Düren and Lohmar, Rösrath and Overath sat NetCologne in recent years on a multi-functional and future-oriented access node ( MSAN Multiservice Access Node = ) the company Marconi called AXH. It makes possible the seamless transition to both new broadband services as well as IP-based network structures. As a side effect resource costs and investments are reduced.
