Netherlands Institute for Art History

The Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorisches Documentatie ( RKD; German: Netherlands Institute for Art History ) is one of the world's major art historical documentation centers. It is located in The Hague, Netherlands.

The documentation center was opened with a basis of Dutch art from the estate of Cornelis Hofstede de Groot in 1932. Today's core of the portfolio is European art from the Middle Ages to the present and includes paintings, drawings, sculptures, and media arts and design. There is also an extensive press, photo and document archive. The institution maintains a database available in the more than 225,000 entries on artists, as well as 70000 entries into works of art. The Documentation Centre is also out the Dutch- language version of the Art and Architecture Thesaurus.

The RKD is supported since 17 June 1993 by a charitable foundation that bears the name of the founder C. Hofstede de Groot Foundation. Art objects which are privately owned, are reviewed by the RKD for consideration.
