Network segment

A network segment is a part of a larger coherent network, which is logically and / or physically separated from the rest of the network.

There are several reasons to partition a network into multiple network segments: For larger networks, this is useful for a load distribution of broadcasts. At interfaces between Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network ( WAN), such as the Internet, a separation for security makes sense.
