Network Video Recorder

A Network Video Recorder (NVR ) is a device for recording video streams that are provided by digital network cameras and transmitted to the NVR via an IP network.

Function

An NVR stores the received digital data on an integrated hard drive. Normally, the device with one or more hard drives are equipped which have a multi-terabyte (TB) large capacity, so as to provide sufficient space available. Many devices also offer additional connectivity for USB devices, memory cards or other storage media. Required disk size and bandwidth are particularly dependent on the number of integrated network cameras, video recording format, resolution, frame rate ( FPS ) and the archiving duration of the video recording.

In fact, it is in a Network Video Recorder to a computer equipped with appropriate software for video recording and designed for continuous operation. The transition to and from a Network Attached Storage ( NAS) is therefore fluent and can not be clearly demarcated. As with a NAS, the connection is made to a Network Video Recorder usually via Ethernet and TCP / IP. An access to the stored data and the configuration interface is thus possible both locally via LAN and globally over the Internet.

Applications

Network Video Recorder are mainly used in the context of video surveillance systems to monitor public and private spaces, transport and technical facilities of all kinds. Depending on the software used on the NVR, features like motion detection, scheduled recording, FTP upload, email notification, etc. can be used. With the ability to make NAS devices using appropriate software to an NVR are video surveillance systems that are based on a Network Video Recorder, now affordable for home users.
