History of the castle

The original castle was built in the early Middle Ages by the Agilolfingern. This Bavarian Herzoghof went in 1247 to the Wittelsbach family.

City Palace

As Count Palatine Otto Heinrich in 1522 along with his brother succeeded to the rule in Pfalz- Neuburg, he found in his residence city Neuburg before a medieval-themed castle which, unlike other prince residences comparable function, structurally not to since the last decades of the 15th century increased demands of a princely court was adjusted. From 1527 he had the castle transform into a Renaissance castle and expand that belongs in Germany for artistic quality and conservation status of the most important palace buildings of the first half of the 16th century.

The work began with the ( now disappeared ) rounds room on the east side of the castle. As of 1532 the so-called Kitchen was listed in the South. 1534 to 1538 was followed by the wings in the north of the courtyard with a swimming area, two board rooms and two residential apartments. The wing had originally not today's gabled roof with gables and Zwerchhäusern from the period around 1590/1600, but was originally, according to the ideas we then set out on the Roman Palatine over the imperial ancient palace, one of the total building area is open towards terrace, which was probably designed landscaped.

Just outside the residence of Neuburg had already begun in 1529 with the investment of a large Hofgarten; and a year later, the Duke and Duchess was also on the outskirts of the city, the hunting lodge built Grunau. Here, too, were medieval traditions, such as the display of hunting trophies and heraldic symbols of rule, associated with numerous allusions to ancient high culture together.

From 1537 a new wing was added to the west of the city palace, the one held in a historicist, reminiscent of Romanesque style Klosterrefektorien Hofstube, a chapel with domination gallery and thus probably a direct-attached- new apartment for Otto Heinrich recorded additionally. In came a big hall, the wood barrel vault extended into the roof. With his conversion to the Lutheran doctrine of 1541 the Count Palatine had provided the chapel with excellent facilities, of which the altar, the Empor parapets and the extensive, painted in 1543 in the Italian - antique- style image program are still preserved today. The chapel is the oldest preserved Protestant church in Bavaria. The famous frescoes designed the Salzburg church painter Hans Bock the Elder Berger .. Here was not only the crucial role of Christ addressed as divine grace guarantor. Rather, a crucial role of the prince in the distribution of this grace within a divinely ordained earthly order has been claimed. The work on the west wing withdrew due to financial difficulties and bankruptcy Ottheinrich 1544, for prolonged periods. The shell was indeed completed already in 1540; but still Rotmarmorgewände the windows were added and worked on the equipment in the 1550s.

Count Palatine Wolfgang of Zweibrücken, who succeeded his cousin Otto Heinrich in the Duchy of Pfalz- Neuburg was 1562 decorate the west wing on the courtyard side with elaborate Sgraffitodekorationen. My main theme is the story of Joseph and his brothers, a highly symbolic in more ways than one subject. Joseph's destined to be betrayed by his brothers and sold to the Pharaoh, in order to then ascend to deputy regent in the realm of the pharaoh because of his wisdom and dream interpretation skills, was not only a symbol of the good regent in general and pursued by Pope and Emperor Protestant princes in particular, but also become a symbol for the application rich fate Ottheinrich. At its steadfastness and ultimate justification Count Palatine Wolfgang wanted to remember and know the ethical core of the image statement, the presentation of a good and just ruler, at the same time, based on his own person. Schloss Neuburg was doing some extent applicable to the Monument in honor of Otto Heinrich, from which both the expulsion and the reinstatement of the prince in his office had taken their output

The Knights' Hall (the lower panel room in the north building ) in 1575 by Hans Pihel equipped with a coffered ceiling and a peripheral wall paneling made of wood, both of which are original.

The imposing east wing was rebuilt in 1665 under Philip Wilhelm in the Baroque style and supplemented with the two round towers.
