Neue Rundschau

The Neue Rundschau is a literary magazine founded in 1890, which appears in the S. Fischer Verlag. With more than 100 years of continuous history, it is one of the oldest cultural publications in Europe.

History

The theater critic Otto Brahm and the publisher Samuel Fischer founded the magazine in 1890 as a freelance stage for modern life. They wanted to give a stage with the weekly magazine especially new art movements such as naturalism. In practice, the magazine was not set to an art direction. After arguments about the artistic focus of the magazine it was the first time in 1892 renamed Free stage for the Entwickelungskampf time. Along with this went a switch to more popular content and to a monthly publication.

1893 took over Otto Julius Bierbaum, the editors of the magazine, which he renamed the New German Rundschau, based on the German Rundschau. Due to differences with Samuel Fischer he abandoned it after four months the position again.

From 1894 to 1922, Oskar Bie was a senior editor.

1904 finally came the name change to "The new Rundschau ". The magazine was subsequently become one of the most important forums for modern literature and essay writing in Wilhelmine German Empire and the Weimar Republic. Striking was the close connection of the magazine with the Fischer publishing house, which had an impact on the publishing practice: the major writers of the publisher could publish here Erstabdrucke and their works were reviewed by colleagues of the same publishing house. Among the reviewers were so important literary critic Alfred Kerr or Robert Musil.

In the years 1919-1921 also Alfred Döblin wrote - under the pseudonym Linke Poot - for the magazine.

After Oskar Bie only Rudolf Kayser and from 1932 Peter Suhrkamp took over the management. During the Nazi rule, the magazine was first published on and was banned shortly before the war ended in 1944. However, it was already founded in 1945 by Gottfried Bermann-Fischer in exile in Stockholm and is still published today.
