Neumünster Abbey

The Neumünster Abbey is located in the suburb of Grund in Luxembourg (city ) on the banks of the Alzette.

History

After the old Benedictine Abbey of Altmunster was during the wars between the Kingdom of France and the Holy Roman Empire, by the troops of the king of France, Francis I, who had occupied the city of Luxembourg on 11 September 1543 destroyed, and 1684, when the troops of Louis XIV besieged and bombarded, was badly damaged, commanded by Marshal de Vauban Créqui and Luxembourg, built by the Benedictine monks in 1606 a new abbey church and its abbey building in the suburb of Grund.

Like all other monasteries and the Neumünster Abbey was secularized in 1796 by the French revolutionary authorities and dispossessed so that when the legislation of the French " Directoire " was introduced in Luxembourg. From 1815 to the monastery belonging to St. John's Church stationed in Luxembourg troops of the German Confederation until 1867 served as a military hospital. After the withdrawal of the troops of the German Confederation in 1867, the abbey was used as a men's prison, following the takeover by the Luxembourg government until 1980.
