Rotscheiteltaube ( Henicophaps foersteri )

The Rotscheiteltaube ( Henicophaps foersteri ) is a species of pigeons birds. It comes exclusively on New Britain and some of the coastal barrier islands in front. The species is classified by the IUCN as Near Threatened ( near threatened ).

Appearance

The Rotscheiteltaube reaches a body length of 38 centimeters. This makes it about the size of a city pigeon. The Rotscheiteltaube has a very close resemblance to the white crown pigeon as it belongs to the genus Henicophaps. What is striking is the very long, strong dark beak that tapers to a point. The elytra metallic shimmer. The iris is dark. The feet are reddish.

Distribution and behavior

The Rotscheiteltaube is an endemic species of New Britain, with 36,520 km ² the largest island of the Bismarck Archipelago. She is a resident of moist evergreen forests and is most commonly observed in the primary rain forest in the lowlands. However, it is also found in the hills and the bottom of the mountain. Very little is known about their way of life. She probably has the same habits as the white crown pigeon. It is a ground-dwelling pigeon that is apparently mostly alone. The reproductive behavior has not been observed so far.
