New General Catalogue

The New General Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars (NGC ) is a catalog of galactic nebulae, star clusters and galaxies.

The catalog

The New General Catalogue was compiled in the 1880s and published in 1888 by Johan Ludvig Emil Dreyer; especially after observations of William Herschel.

1895 and 1908 it was extended to the two index catalogs IC I and IC II

The NGC 7840 contains objects, including most of the Messier catalog. In contrast to the Messier Catalog objects of the NGC catalog are ordered by right ascension. Due to the large number he also includes some minor errors, such as some objects are included more than once under different catalog numbers or added to one of the index catalogs again. A newer version of NGCs is the Revised New General Catalogue ( RNGC ). In long-term observation of the catalog is refined from the NGC / IC project (see links). True followers of this catalog in conjunction with its Index catalog extension does not exist. Since the early 20th century catalogs were created just specifically for each object type. In particular, there are several galaxy catalogs.

The NGC is often used by amateur astronomers because it contains many objects that can still be observed with amateur telescopes.
