New Glasgow, Nova Scotia

New Glasgow ( Baile Beag gäl. / Glaschu Ùr ) is a city in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia in Pictou County.

It lies on the East River of Pictou and forms with the neighboring communities of Stellarton, Westville, Trenton ( Nova Scotia ) Trenton and Pictou the fourth-largest metropolitan area in the province.

History

1784 Deacon Thomas Fraser founded the city. The first trading post was opened in 1809. 1840 George MacKenzie opened the first shipyard of the city.

Economy

New Glasgow is the industrial center of the region. Most important employers in the city are a tire factory from Michelin (1400 employees), a call center Convergys (900 employees), a paper mill from Kimberly -Clark (1300 employees) and Trenton Works, a manufacturer of railroad cars (1200 employees).
