New Hanover Island

Lavongai ( German: New Hanover ) is an island in the Bismarck Archipelago and belongs politically to Papua New Guinea and the province of New Ireland. Lavongai is traversed by the Tirpitz Mountains in east-west direction. The highest elevation in the 1186 km ² large island measures 957 meters. In English-speaking countries it is called with the English translation of its old name, New Hanover Iceland. 1960 lived on the island of 5,000 inhabitants.

Lavongai is quite isolated and mountainous, so that only grow on the coasts of coconut trees.

On the island of only two mammalian species are known, the bat species Nyctimene albiventer and Rousettus amplexicaudatus. The Mohr nun, a small Prachtfinkenart with a predominantly black body plumage, is found only on this island.
