After two years in which New Haven is not past the first playoff round, they failed 1977/78 and 1978/79 respectively in the finals at the Maine Mariners. For the fourth and last time New Haven moved into the 1988/89 season to the finals to the Calder Cup one, but lost again to the enemy, in this case, the Adirondack Red Wings.

After the 1991/92 season, the franchise entered into cooperation with the newly established Ottawa Senators of the National Hockey League and was renamed as Ottawa's farm team in New Haven Senators.
