New Iberia (French: La Nouvelle- Ibérie; span Nueva Iberia ) is a city and the parish seat of Iberia Parish, Louisiana.

According to United States Census 2000, the city had 32,623 inhabitants. New Iberia is located 48 km southeast of Lafayette.

Geography

New Iberia is located in southern Louisiana. According to United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 27.5 km ², of which 27 km ² of land and 0.5 km ² is water area.

Demography

The census in 2000 revealed a number of 32,623 people, 11,765 households, and 8,335 families living in the city. The population density was 1208.3 per km ². There were 12,880 housing units at an average density of 470.9 per km ². Here lived 56.99 % White, 38.42 % African American, 2.64 % Asian, 0.21 % Native American, 0.02 % Pacific Islander, 0.51 % from other races, and 1.2% two or more races. Latin Americans had a share of 1.49 % of the population.

The age distribution was as follows: 29.8 % were under 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 26.8 % were between 25 and 44, 20.4% were between 45 and 64 and 13.3 % were 65 years or older. The average age was 34 years.
