New Madrid is a small town in the southeast of the U.S. state of Missouri. It is the administrative seat of the eponymous county. In the 2000 census, 3,334 people lived there.

Geography

New Madrid is located on the Mississippi River, about 120 river miles below the mouth of the Ohio.

History

The name of the town goes back to the founding in 1788 by Spain. In contrast to the Spanish capital, Madrid, the name is uttered with the stress on the first syllable.

Spain moved deliberately settlers from the still young United States and gave them Spanish citizenship. Spain was assumed that a settlement would offer by former American protection against a military invasion from the United States. The original settlement was destroyed by flooding of the Mississippi; only a second settlement northeast of the first settlement founded proved to be more durable.

In 1800, France acquired from Spain agglomerations, so that New Madrid briefly bore the name Nouvelle Madrid. 1803, the country through the Louisiana Purchase from France to the United States. Since then, New Madrid belongs to the state of Missouri.

In the years 1811 and 1812, the city through a series of about 1000 known earthquake ( New Madrid earthquake of 1811) was. These reached up to magnitude 8, the highest ever measured in a region of the United States away from a subduction zone.

At the start of the American Civil War, New Madrid was due to its location on the Mississippi of strategic importance. The city was first occupied by Confederate troops, but on March 12, 1862 captured by troops of the Union Army under John Pope.

2011 saw a result of the Mississippi flood of flooding in the city.

Demography

Data obtained from the census in 2000 3.334 inhabitants of New Madrid were living in 1,275 households; among them were 882 families. The population density was 285 per km ². In place of 1,414 residential units were recorded. Among the population was 72.6 % White, 26.5% African American, 0.2% American Indian, 0.3 % Asian and 0.1 % of other ethnic groups; 0.4 % reported belonging to several ethnic groups.

Among the 1,275 households 35.5% had children under the age of 18; 28.4 % were single-person households. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size is 3.02.

The population was spread out with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.7 % from 18 to 24, 26.0% 25-44 years, 21.8 % from 45 to 64 years and 15.4 % of 65 years or older. The median age was 36 years.

The median household income was $ 27,422, the median family income $ 34,464. The per capita income in New Madrid was $ 14,639. Under the poverty line lived 22.6 % of families and 25.0 % of the population.
