History

New River has not for a steady river of the same name, which is part of its name to the Agua Fria River catchment area. The town was founded in 1868 by Darrell Duppa coach station. For many years the city terminus of Black Canyon Highway was (now runs on this route of Interstate 17). The paved road ended in New River and leads to Prescott only as a dirt track road on.
