New Russians

The term New Russians (Russian новый русский - nowy russki ) represents a arisen at the end of perestroika stereotype that is used to describe a new social class in Russia.

Generally understood as the "New Russians ", the successful businessmen or well-paid employees of a large company. In Russia, the term " New Russian" first appeared in 1992 in an article in the Russian newspaper "Kommersant " (Russian Коммерсантъ ). The first use of this term but was used two years earlier in the English form " New Russian " in the eponymous book by U.S. American journalist Hedrick Smith. Later, the phrase was translated into Russian literally.

There is also the opinion that this term is a play on words from the French term " nouveau riche " ( the nouveau riche ).
