New Synagogue, Opole

The synagogue harbor road in Opole from 1897 was on the Pascheke on the port road. It was built in the Moorish style according to plans by architect Felix Breslauer Henry. It replaced the synagogue on Hospital Street in Opole.

History

First, Henry 1893 should design an extension for the old synagogue in the Hospital Street in the Old Town Opole. But in the same year the Jewish community came to the decision to build a new building. Even in 1893 they acquired a plot of land in the village of Thal Wilhelm on the Pascheke which a district Opole in 1899.

In the spring of 1894 began with the construction of the new synagogue. Responsible for the execution was the Opole master mason E. Schmidt. Due to the loose and wet subsoil, the synagogue was completed under structural difficulties until 1897.

On Monday 21 June 1897, the farewell ceremony was held in the synagogue at the Hospital Road and the Torah scrolls were brought from the old synagogue in the new synagogue on the port road. On 22 June 1897, the inauguration of the synagogue took place, to which was sent as a government representative of the senior executive officer of Heydebrand.

During the Kristallnacht on 9 November 1938, the synagogue was set on fire, the ruins were demolished until 1939.

In the 1960s, a school building was built on the site of the synagogue. 1998, a memorial plaque was erected.
