New York City Department of Parks and Recreation

The New York City Department of Parks and Recreation or shortly NYC Parks is an agency of the City Council New York City, which is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of public parks in the city. The State Parks ( State Parks ) in the city, such as the Gantry Plaza State Park are managed by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.

History

Before 1934 each of the five boroughs had its own park authorities. Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia ordered the city planner Robert Moses to combine these into a single authority. This new Department of Parks for New York City took over the administration of the individual authorities. In 1938, the Department is responsible for beaches and sidewalks in Coney Iceland, Rockaway Peninsula and South Beach from Borough Presidents Offices was transferred. The real New York City Department of Parks and Recreation was established in 1976 under Mayor Abraham D. Beame.

Tasks

The Authority manages about 5,000 parks, playgrounds, bike paths and green spaces to about 113 km ², which represents about 14 percent of the city area. This includes more than 800 sports fields, 550 tennis courts, 1,000 playgrounds, 66 swimming pools, 48 recreational facilities, 17 nature centers, 13 golf courses and 20 kilometers of public beach. In addition, about 1,200 monuments, 23 museums and 1.6 million trees will be added in the city. The largest maintained by NYC Parks Park is 11 km ² of Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx. The well-known parks in the city 's Central Park, Prospect Park, Van Cortlandt Park, Flushing Meadows Park and Staten Iceland Greenbelt are from NYC Parks supervised (see also List of parks in New York City).

Park Law Enforcement
