New York Red Bulls

The New York Red Bulls are an American football franchise of the Major League Soccer ( MLS) from Harrison (New Jersey). The team carries out their home games at Red Bull Arena.

The office of the franchise is how the stadium in Harrison, New Jersey, where also the umbrella organization for Red Bull New York has its headquarters.

Prior to its acquisition by the Austrian beverage company Red Bull in 2006 was named the team's MetroStars. Previously, the team was known as the New York / New Jersey MetroStars.

History

New York / New Jersey MetroStars (1995 to 2000)

The original name of the franchise was Empire Soccer Club. After this name today is still the largest Fangruppierung, Empire Supporters Club, named. Club owner Hans Müller and Stuart Subotnick were both executives at the company Metromedia, hence the word "Metro" was taken over in the name of the football club. Tab Ramos, the first player who signed a contract with the MLS, was also the first player to the MetroStars. The Metro Stars played on April 13, 1996 their first game in Major League Soccer. Opponent was the Los Angeles Galaxy, who won 2-1. Giovanni Savarese scored the first goal in this case the MetroStars in the club's history. The team celebrated their first win only on Matchday 6. After two more defeats Eddie Firmani was dismissed for failure. His successor was the former Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz. Although this managed with the team a place in the play-offs, but his record with 12 wins and as many defeats was also not very good. In play-offs, the club failed in the same Conference semifinals ( Quarterfinals ) at DC United. Although the first game was won, the last two were lost, however.

In 1997, the team for the first time participate in the U.S. Open Cup. After victories over the Richmond Kickers and Long Iceland Rough Riders, the stars fail in the semifinals to Dallas Burn.

In early 1998 the New York / New Jersey has been removed from the team name. The club was then called only MetroStars, which is a rarity in American sports meant no more reference to the city or the region to give.

2001-2005

In autumn 2005, the previous coach Bob Bradley was released. This left the MetroStars the play-offs. In the first game in the play-offs, the team was eliminated.

Acquisition by Red Bull (2006 to 2007)

In March 2006, the Anschutz Entertainment Group sold the MetroStars to Red Bull Co. Ltd. .. Red Bull then changed the team name to Red Bull New York to even the colors of the team and the complete corporate design has been amended accordingly.

2008 to today

In the 2008 season, New York was the first time in a play- off final. The team defeated Columbus Crew 3-1. In the qualifying round of the CONCACAF Champions League 2009/10, the Red Bulls failed to W Connection of Trinidad and Tobago. On 21 August 2009 the contract was terminated with the previous coach Juan Carlos Osorio, the assistant coach Richie Williams, meanwhile, followed the position as head coach and was until January as an interim coach. In an official press release January 7, 2010 it was announced that the Swede Hans Backe on January 11, takes over the position as head coach of the New York Red Bulls.

In his first season as coach, he managed to achieve with the team in first place in the Eastern Conference. In the play-offs, the Red Bulls dropped out in the Conference semi-finals ( quarter-finals ) against the San Jose Earthquakes. The first leg was still won 1-0. In the return match Red Bull defeated 3-1. In the second round of the U.S. Open Cup match against the Harrisburg City Islanders could not be won. After extension was the final score 1-0 to the team from the third-tier USL Second Division.

For the 2011 season the longtime captain of the team, Juan Pablo Angel, was released by the Red Bulls. He later moved to Los Angeles Galaxy.

During the first years the MetroStars were always in black or white jerseys. Later it had a black and red vertical striped pattern. Since then, the team was taken over by Red Bull, is the home jersey white and has a red border. This is complemented by a prominent Red Bull logo.

Since the start of the season 2010, the Red Bulls play at the Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey. With the construction of the stadium, which can hold 25 189 spectators, was started in September 2006. On March 20, 2010 was the opening. New York Red Bulls Academy

Red Bull New York operates, in addition to the New York Red Bulls, and the New York Red Bulls Academy. By providing this free for the players means the organization can operate talent in the New York Metropolitan Area. There are a total of five youth teams (U -13, U-14, U -15, U -16, U -18).
