New York State Route 137

The New York State Route 137 (NY 137 ) is a 8.87 km ( 5.51 Intl. ) Long state highway in Westchester County, New York, USA. The track is the continuation of the running in the state of Connecticut Route 137, which connects New York's Route 137 with Stamford. NY 137 passes through the hamlet of Pound Ridge and ends at NY 121 north of the hamlet of Bedford ( Bedford Village locally called ).

Route description

NY 137 begins at the border between the states of New York and Connecticut, the territory of the Town of Pound Ridge as a continuation of CT 137 Not far at the state border leads NY 137 east at Pound Ridge Golf Club over, extending back at the border. NY 137 continues in a northerly direction away and is called there Highridge Road, the Old Snake Hill Road crosses twice and, after descending from Snake Hill, reaches the NY 137, the hamlet Sarles Corners, where the road crosses the Upper Shad Road. Then leads NY 137 at the edge of the Horseshoe Hill through a residential area until the route crosses the Westchester Avenue. At this intersection, NY 137 enters the name and leads as Westchester Avenue.

After this intersection, NY 137 runs northwards through the city and finally reaches the same hamlet, consisting of several residential houses and commercial establishments are concentrated around the intersection with the eastern terminus of NY 172 (Pound Ridge Road). In the north-east NY 137 leaves the village and leads to the Hiram Halle Memorial Library past the junction of NY 124 (Salem Road). At this junction turn NY 137 north, crosses euine Road at NY 124 and beats along the Stone Hill Road a northwesterly direction. In this section, NY 137 is flanked by trees and leads past a pond. Shortly thereafter, are on the road a few houses, while this westward climb up the mountain.

On the other side of the mountain, the road descends again and leads in southwestern direction at several small lakes and the Stone Hill River past. The course of the road now follows again a western direction and writhing leads NY 137 at some houses over the territory of the Town of Bedford. Within the Bedford Street retains its name when, crossing the Stone Hill River and descends into the hamlet of Bedford, NY where 137 achieved at the intersection with Old Post Road here referred NY 121 its northern terminus.

History

NY 137 was first established as a continuation of Stamford, Connecticut north road leading to the renumbering of State Routes in New York in 1930. The original route began north of the hamlet of Bedford and leads from the NY 22 Girdle Ridge Road and Pea Pond Road and a short distance overlapped with NY 121 to the state line into Connecticut. On September 1, 1980, the property and the maintenance obligation of Girdle Ridge Road and Pea Pond Road from the State was transferred to the Westchester County. NY 137 was therefore capped at the southern end of overlap with NY 121. The former route of NY 137 Girdle Ridge Road and along Pea Pond Road has been designated as the new County Road 309.

One along Route 137 planned in the 1950s in the two states expressway was not realized.

NY 137A

NY 137A was a branch line that connected NY 137 on the Westchester Avenue with State Highway 184 (later Route 124) in Connecticut. This also 1930 set distance was renumbered in 1932 as NY 104 before a new number as NY 394 was around 1936, so that the duplication with U.S. Highway 104 in upstate New York has been eliminated. In 1967, NY 394 was an extension of NY 124 This measure, however, was of short duration; of 1970 ended the NY 124 in the hamlet of Pound Ridge. The Westchester Avenue in this area is now maintained by the Town of Pound Ridge.
