New York Symphony Orchestra

The New York Symphony Society was an orchestra that was founded in 1878 in New York City by Leopold Damrosch. For several years it was in fierce competition with the older Philharmonic Symphony Society of New York. It was supported by Andrew Carnegie, the ( opened in 1891 ), the Carnegie Hall was built specifically for this orchestra. The Symphony Society presented its musical focus on the more colorful orchestral works from France and Russia, while the Philharmonic Society is particularly focused on the German repertoire. After the death of Leopold Damrosch his son Walter Damrosch took over as musical director of the orchestra.

1903 there was a reorganization of the orchestra, connected with the renaming the New York Symphony Orchestra. 1920 was the first American orchestra, which went on a tour of Europe. 1928 finally was merged with the Philharmonic Symphony Society to the " Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra of New York", later renamed the New York Philharmonic.
