History

The National Party was founded on 13 and 14 May 1936 in Wellington. It emerged between the Reform Party and the Liberal Party from the coalition of 1915. While the Reform Party was more rural -oriented, the Liberal Party had its basis more in the cities. The merger of the previously competing parties was a reaction to the rise of the Labour Party, which first introduced the Prime Minister of New Zealand after the election of 1935. However, the merger resulted in the election in 1938, only a small increase in votes.

In the 1949 election the party achieved a parliamentary majority for the first time and exhibited with Sidney Holland the prime minister. Holland remained until a serious illness in 1957 at the office. His successor, Keith Holyoake could not win, which takes place shortly after the government takeover of choice and had to wait until the next election, before he took office again. At the party in 1972, he declared after twelve years in office, his resignation and made his former deputy, Jack Marshall as prime minister. This lost the election in the same year against the popular Norman Kirk. After this had died in office, succeeded Robert Muldoon to beat in 1975 his successor. Under the Robert Muldoon Think Big era began in New Zealand, at the end of Muldoon's deselection was 1984. It was followed by the hitherto longest time for the opposition National Party, which ended only with Jim Bolger's election as Prime Minister in 1990. He was succeeded in 1997 Jenny Shipley as the first New Zealand Prime Minister, but the Labour Party had to concede defeat two years later. Since then, the National Party was in the role of the opposition faction. 2008 center-left politics was with the election victory of the National Party in New Zealand, the change of government after nine years instead.
