The State Highway 3 ( SH3 ) is a New Zealand State Highway. He was one of eight former National State Highways. The 489 km long road serves the west coast of the North Island of New Zealand, linking State Highway 1 and State Highway 2 kilometer runs from north to south.

Route
The road leaves in Hamilton SH 1 and runs initially southward through agricultural land, crossing Te Awamutu. Parts of this route section are expanded into a four-lane expressway. From Otorohanga, the road follows the valley of the Waipa River to Te Kuiti. Shortly thereafter branches of the New Zealand State Highway 3 from the southeast. Then the SH 3 turns to the southwest and passes through sparsely populated farmland, crosses several mountain ridge and then follow the Awakino Gorge towards the coast. In Eight Miles Junction eleven kilometers to Te Kuiti, the SH 4 SH leads from the 3 to the south. The highway now follows the coastline of the North Taranaki Bight. On Tongaporoutu River the road turns into the interior to avoid coastal cliffs. She climbs the Mount Messenger and then rises again by river valleys from the coast near Urenui.
Shortly after Brixton branches of the 15.6 km long SH 3a via New Plymouth leads rather than directly to the south and in Inglewood rejoins the SH3. Then, the road reaches New Plymouth, where she swung sharply to the south in the interior. The SH 45 Continue along the coast and travels around Mount Taranaki in the west. The SH3 leads east at Mount Taranaki by over Inglewood, Stratford and Eltham Hawera according to the South Taranaki Bight.
From Hawera from the road follows the coast of the South Taranaki Bight to the southeast as far as Patea and Wanganui. The two sections through the canyons Awakino Gorge and Manawatu Gorge are occasionally closed during heavy rains due to landslides and rock fall.
The construction of a bypass route around Bell Block, a satellite city of New Plymouth, began in 2007.
