New Zealand State Highway 7
The State Highway 7 (SH 7) is a New Zealand State Highway. It is 272 km long and was formerly one of the eight national state highways.
The SH 7 crossing the Southern Alps and connects the West Coast region of Canterbury, he forms a connection between the two longest highways of the South Island of New Zealand State Highway 1 and State Highway 6
The State Highway 7 is both in cities and in rural areas, for the most part a road with one lane in each direction with intersections and property accesses, ie equivalent to about a federal highway / main road. Route
The SH 7 leaves the SH 1 in Waipara, about 60 km north of Christchurch and runs initially in a northerly direction. It crosses several rivers and touches the Balmoral State Forest. Just north of Culverden it reaches the valley of the Waiau River and swings to the west. He now follows the valley of this river and its tributary, the Lewis River up to the 907 m high Lewis Pass, the northernmost of the three major road passes through the Southern Alps.
On the west side of the pass, the road crosses the small spa town of Maruia Springs and continues its way in a northwesterly direction along the valley of the River Maruia to Springs Junction. There is a connection to State Highway 65 From here, the SH 7 crossing a small pass, the Rahu Saddle, and then follows the valley of the Inangahua River to the town of Reefton. From Reefton Highway swings southwest and follows the course of the Grey River to two kilometers from its mouth at Greymouth. There ends the SH 7 and connects to the SH 6.
The SH 7 has a branch line, the SH 7A. This 9.4 km long road connecting State Highway 7 via the Waiau Bridge with the spa town of Hanmer Springs.
